Good Enough for Moses, Good Enough for Me

My car won't shift out of park. I need to get it towed and, eventually, repaired. Yet another reason I won't miss having a car in Chicago.

Speaking of Chicago, now that I have a few Chicago-ites reading this site (and more who may well live in other large cities), I have some questions to ask that you all might be able to answer:

a.) how far in advance should I start apartment-hunting?
b.) same question, but replace "apartment" with "job"?
c.) anyone know any offices that need bitches in the Chicago area?
d.) how is it, getting around a big city without a car?
e.) what area of Chicago is the awesomest?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, as well.

  • 1) Apartment hunting should begin probably a month before you get here---I'd spend that time in June when you're here hunting like a mad man.

    2) Job hunting could probably start a couple months before you get here--have a couple of interviews (if possible) set up when you head out here in June. Try to do some phone interviews, if you can.

    3) Crap. No. I'd comb temp agencies, etc.

    4) Don't know, I rely on Christine waaaaay too much. A ton of people do it everyday, though, and they seem a-ok. I'd become buds with someone near you who has a car that they'd be willing to lend to you/take you on extended IKEA, etc. trips with.

    5) I'm a fan of the Wicker Park/Bucktown area, myself. There's a lot of decent bars to see good shows in that area.

    6) Wear clean undies.

  • Currently I have no comment, but I haven't commented in a while and felt my voice should be heard!

  • a.) Hmm. Not sure. I still live at home because rents are sky high. And I'm cheap, so...you know...

b.) Start looking for a job a year before you even have the faintest idea that you MIGHT want to even visit Chicago.

c.) My company is always looking for a bitch to drink the company kool-aid. It's quite tasty, I should add.

d.) CTA and Metra take you pretty much where you would want to go. Living in a central location with good access to public transportation is key.

e.) The awesomest? That's a tough one. Lincoln Park is full of the uber-hip 20-something yuppies that are way too excited to be out of school and "adults" for the first time. It's also full of people that didn't grow up in Chicago, but moved here for a job. I hear the Wicker Park area is pretty cool. I'm biased because I like Evanston. It's the burbs, but its so close to the city, if feels like a city culturally (great places to eat, diversity of people, condos all over the damn place, Northwestern University) but still a burb (LOTS of green, the lake, and other suburby goodness).

You already have these links, but they are really usesful:

CTA: www.yourcta.com (bus and trains in the city and immediate burbs)
Metra: www.metrarail.com (regional train service for the immediate and far outlying burbs into the city)
Metromix: www.metromix.com (good resource to find out what is going on in the city)

If I can think of anything else I'll be sure to let you know. When is the big move?

  • I'm from the suburbs, but from what I've seen/heard/experienced:

d)I've heard people say that, in Chicago, if public transportation can't get you there, it isn't worth going. It's not 100% true, but having a friend with a car is definitely good enough.

    e) The Lincoln Park area, specifically Wrigleyville is really fun, but also gets really pricey. Lately I've been hearing that Wicker Park is great too, but I don't actually know anyone who has lived there.

Some additional links for stuff to do:

    http://www.redeyechicago.com/
    http://www.chicagoredstreak.com/index/

They're both owned by the big local papers (Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times), but they're aimed for "younger readers." The ads are worth more than the articles.

    Hope this helps. :)
