I'll only agree with the retard assessment if the song is some pop schlock (Britney, Backstreet boys, etc.), or something ultra mellow (Norah Jones). I guess I might also consider the retard assessment if you say you were "scatting" along to an instrumental.
I've done this same thing several times on road trips singing along to The Pixies, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc. Oh, and there was that one drunken night in my youth where I tried to emulate Franki Valli.
